Our founder, Sharron Haggett, has transitioned from a career in special education administration and assistive technology to establish SamShines LLC with the intention of expanding her ability to offer unparalleled, comprehensive accessibility supports and disability consulting services.
Sharron was born and raised in the United Kingdom. She relocated to the United States during high school with her family, including her older sister who has multiple disabilities. While taking a break from undergraduate studies, Sharron worked with the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) in New York, assisting elementary school students with vision, hearing and communication difficulties, many of whom were identified with pervasive developmental delays or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
While raising her own three children, Sharron completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology with an emphasis on Child Development & Language Acquisition, and a Masters degree in Special Education. Sharron also holds a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License to teach language arts and social studies (U.S. grades 5-8) and students with learning, emotional, or intellectual disabilities (U.S. grades K-12). Sharron is a certified Wilson Language instructor and has taught inclusive, self-contained and resource classes.
During extensive personal, volunteer and professional experiences, Sharron developed an inherent understanding of alternative instruction and assessment strategies. Inspired by interactions with students who were frustrated or not successful with typical instructional methods, she transitioned to a position as an Assistive Technology specialist. After 5 years of assessing and implementing assistive technology tools and services, Sharron relocated and accepted a promotion into special education administration. Within that role, Sharron was afforded the opportunity to establish and direct the assistive technology program for the school division of 15 schools with outreach to various regional programs between 2009 until 2015 when Sharron began her transition to consulting.
In an effort to provide a full range of accessibility and disability consulting supports, Sharron is now working toward her license as a case manager for Medicaid Waiver programs and earning additional assistive technology credentials through the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA).
Sharron is also aiming to facilitate collaboration between clinical practitioners and educational specialists in order to help eliminate duplication of services and potential frustrations for individuals, care-givers and support providers. She recognizes that unified services and supports are absolutely essential to expedite accessibility and guarantee equality.
SamShines LLC is all about working TOGETHER.
